The characteristics and advantages of the School
(1) A large number of outstanding talents have been cultivated in the fields of Marxist journalism, ASEAN communication, and ethnic cultural integration and dissemination. Undergraduate journalism education began in 1972, followed by the master’s program in 1986, and the doctoral program in Marxist journalism in 2019. Over 11,000 students have graduated (31% of whom are from ethnic minority backgrounds, and 312 are ASEAN international students). Among the graduates, 38% are engaged in work related to international communication (ASEAN) and ethnic cultural integration and dissemination.
(2) The School has formed distinct characteristics in the research areas of the Chinese Communist Party's news policy changes, ASEAN communication, and the integration and dissemination of the cultures of Guangxi's indigenous ethnic groups. Leveraging National Social Science Fund of China Major Projects, the School conducts systematic research on the century-long evolution of the Chinese Communist Party's news policies. The academy fully leverages Guangxi's geographical advantages and, through six National Social Science Fund of China, conducts research on ASEAN media, ASEAN opinion leaders, and the dissemination of Chinese culture and governance experience to ASEAN countries. Additionally, the School undertakes research on the integration and dissemination of the cultures of Guangxi's indigenous ethnic groups such as the Zhuang, Yao, Miao, and Dong through four National Social Science Fund of China.
(3) The School plays a unique role in talent training, ASEAN communication, and the public opinion of ethnic minorities (border regions) through social services. Leveraging the Southwest Region Talent Training Base of the former General Administration of Press and Publication and the China-ASEAN Cultural Industry (Media) Talent Training Base, the School has trained over 1,200 professionals in Marxist journalism, ASEAN communication, and ethnic cultural communication. Through the Guangxi Public Opinion Research Institute, the School provides services related to ASEAN, ethnic minorities, and border region public opinion, contributing to border stability, ethnic harmony, and the development of cultural and educational undertakings in ethnic areas.
The achievements of the School in the past five years in talent cultivation, faculty development, scientific research, and social services.
An integrated talent cultivation system for undergraduate and master's students in Marxist journalism, ASEAN communication, and ethnic cultural integration and dissemination has been established. Undergraduate and master's programs offer courses such as "Marxist Journalism," "International Communication," "ASEAN Media Studies," and "Ethnic Journalism and Cultural Communication Studies." Master's students focus on key research areas including Marxist journalism, ASEAN communication, and ethnic cultural integration and dissemination. Over the past 34 years, the program has graduated 34 cohorts of master's students, with an average of 97 master's degrees awarded annually in the past five years. Additionally, 26 ASEAN master's students have been enrolled. Furthermore, 165 undergraduate students have been jointly trained with the University of Social Sciences and Humanities under the Vietnam National University, Hanoi, through a 2+2 program. The "Graduate Student Academic Activity Management Measures" have been formulated, and over the past five years, 123 graduate students have been funded to participate in domestic and international academic activities and have published conference papers. The academy has established 35 internship and employment bases in central media outlets stationed in Guangxi, major media in the autonomous region, and county-level integrated media centers in border areas. The journalism program has been recognized as one of the first national distinctive programs and a national first-class undergraduate program construction site. The course "Marxist Journalism" has been awarded as one of the first national first-class undergraduate courses and an autonomous region-level curriculum ideological and political demonstration course. In 2019, the academy became part of the second batch of comprehensive reform pilot departments for the Ministry of Education's "Three-Wide Education" initiative. For five consecutive years, student social practice has been commended for practice education at the national and autonomous region levels. In competitions such as the "Internet+" Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition and the "Challenge Cup," students have won 2 national gold medals, 4 silver medals, and 5 bronze medals, as well as 18 provincial and ministerial-level gold medals. In professional competitions such as the National College Student Advertising Art Competition, students have won 11 national gold medals and 19 silver medals.
A well-structured and diverse faculty team has been formed through a combination of recruitment and training. Utilizing funds from initiatives such as the ministry-university joint construction, the Comprehensive Strength Improvement Plan for Universities in Central and Western China, and the "Double First-Class" construction projects, the School has recruited Professor Zheng Baowei, a member of the central Marxist journalism expert group, Professor Wang Shiyong, a "Chongqing Talent · Distinguished Teacher," and six young doctors from "Double First-Class" universities and overseas (within three years of employment, three have obtained national social science projects, and two have obtained provincial and ministerial-level research projects). Additionally, three faculty members with backgrounds in computer science, ethnology, and international relations have been introduced. Faculty training agreements have been signed with the School of Journalism at Renmin University of China and Fudan University. Twelve faculty members have participated in visiting scholar programs in ASEAN countries. Focusing on major and key national social science projects, the School has formed collaborative innovation research teams in partnership with universities such as Tsinghua University, Communication University of China, and Nanjing University.
Focusing on three disciplinary directions, the School has developed distinctive organized research activities. Research centers have been established for Marxist journalism, China-ASEAN international communication, and ethnic cultural communication. The School has hosted a series of national academic conferences commemorating the 200th anniversaries of the births of Marx and Engels, and the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Chinese Communist Party. Additionally, the academy has organized international academic conferences such as the China-ASEAN Media and Journalism Education Symposium and the Ethnic Journalism and Cultural Communication Innovation Symposium. The School conducts interdisciplinary research in Marxist cultural theory and intelligent communication in collaboration with disciplines such as Marxist theory, ethnology, international relations, and computer science. The journal "Culture and Communication" has been included in the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences' A Journal Database. In the past five years, the School has secured 41 provincial and ministerial-level projects or higher, including 14 national social science projects (1 major project, 2 key projects; 4 in Marxist journalism, 6 in ASEAN communication, and 4 in ethnic cultural integration and dissemination). The School has received one first prize, two second prizes, and four third prizes for outstanding achievements in social sciences in Guangxi. Faculty have published 164 papers in core journals (82 in CSSCI), with six articles fully reprinted in "Xinhua Digest." The average annual research funding per faculty member has reached 69,000 RMB.
Rooted in Guangxi, the School serves major national strategies such as the China-ASEAN Community of Shared Future and border ideological security. The Guangxi Marxist Journalism Research and Practice Base has trained nearly 700 faculty members nationwide in Marxist journalism. The ASEAN Communication Research Team, Guangxi Public Opinion Research Institute (a direct reporting point to the Central publicity Department), and Guangxi New Media Laboratory (co-established with People’s Daily Online) have submitted over 260 reports on ASEAN and ethnic public opinion to the Central publicity Department and the autonomous region, with 27 reports being adopted. The School undertakes the editing, publishing, and video production and dissemination for the China-ASEAN Expo Bulletin. Faculty and students conduct research on ethnic cultural communication in ethnic autonomous counties and Sino-Vietnamese border counties, producing 21 reports on the "Double Creation" of intangible cultural heritage. As the only pilot university in ethnic regions to submit works for the China Journalism Awards, the academy's submission, "The Five Years of Shibadong Village," won the first prize in 2019.
